Bipolar disorder

Bipolar disorder is characterised by unusual, severe shifts in mood and energy — from episodes of depression to episodes of mania or hypomania. With the right treatment, the vast majority of people with bipolar disorder live stable, productive and full daily lives.

How it presents

  • Episodes of depression (as described on the relevant page)
  • Episodes of mania or hypomania: increased energy, decreased need for sleep, excessive self-confidence, rapid speech, impulsive decisions
  • Marked changes in behaviour, work and relationships
  • In severe cases, psychotic symptoms during an episode
  • Between episodes, relatively normal functioning

When to seek help

Bipolar disorder often first presents in your 20s or 30s. It is typically recognised when, after one or more depressive episodes, an episode of mania or hypomania appears. If you or someone close to you notices unusual, sustained mood changes that do not match your character, the right diagnosis is the first step.

How we approach it at Mindbeing

Treatment of bipolar disorder is long-term and typically includes mood stabilisers as a central clinical tool. At Mindbeing this is combined with regular monitoring, psychoeducation (recognising early warning signs), CBT-adapted interventions, and — when indicated — family involvement. The goals are stabilisation, reducing the frequency and intensity of episodes, and maintaining full functioning.

If you recognise yourself or someone close to you in the above, a first session is the most practical next step.
