Psychotic disorders & schizophrenia

Psychotic disorders include schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder and other conditions in which a person experiences reality in a way that differs significantly from that of others. With modern psychiatric treatment, many patients maintain autonomy, work and meaningful relationships.

How it presents

  • Hallucinations: hearing voices or other sensory experiences without an external source
  • Delusions: fixed beliefs not shared by others (e.g. that you are being watched, that you have a special mission)
  • Disorganised thinking or speech
  • Negative symptoms: reduced emotional expression, withdrawal, lack of initiative
  • Difficulty distinguishing internal from external reality

When to seek help

In a first psychotic episode, early medical intervention significantly influences long-term outcome. If you or someone close to you is experiencing the above symptoms — particularly if they appear suddenly, are accompanied by extensive withdrawal, or create dangerous situations — psychiatric assessment is urgent. In acute presentations, the initial assessment may need to take place in a hospital setting.

How we approach it at Mindbeing

Modern treatment of psychotic disorders includes antipsychotic medication as a central clinical tool, psychoeducation for patient and family, reintegration support (work, education, relationships), and — where indicated — psychotherapeutic interventions (CBT for psychosis, supportive therapy). Mindbeing offers clinical monitoring and long-term management. In cases requiring more intensive care than a private practice can provide, Dr Tzampazidou collaborates with the public health system for appropriate referral.

In a psychiatric emergency (risk to your life or the life of another), call 166 (EKAB) immediately or go to the nearest hospital with psychiatric emergency services.

If you recognise yourself or someone close to you in the above, a first session is the most practical next step.
